A cordon was put in place in Weymouth town centre as firefighters tackled a blaze inside a fast-food chain.
The fire broke inside an oven in Greggs on St Mary Street today at around 9am, causing the store to remain closed for the rest of the day.
Three fire crews attended the incident from Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester.
A sign was put up on the glass door which read: “We’ve had to temporarily close the shop. We’ll be back soon. Don’t worry, our ovens are still baking at Greggs, King Street.”
Miguel Lagartinho was working a couple of doors down at the Cornish Bakehouse when he saw a fire engine come down the street.
He said: “I saw the fire engine passing by, there was a bit of a spark in one of the ovens, but the fire service dealt with it quickly.”
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire inside the store using a hose reel jet before moving the oven outside onto the street.
A nearby store worker said: “There was a fire in Greggs, it was just a small one and they handled it really well.”
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “There was a small fire in an oven which crews extinguished with a hose reel jet. They carried out checks and then went on their way.”
No injuries have been reported and at present, it is unknown when the store will re-open, but the Echo has reached out to Greggs for more information.
There is an additional Greggs store inside of Asda Express on King Street, Weymouth or additionally just off Chickerell Link Road, Chickerell.
