Organisers of Weymouth Beach Motocross have confirmed that the event will go ahead tomorrow despite the forecast for heavy rain and strong winds.

While riders will again zoom across the sands, spectator numbers may be hit by the weather.

Ryan Hope, president of joint organisers Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, has confirmed that the popular beach event, which is now in its 40th year, will go ahead whatever the weather.

Speaking on Friday he said: “The event is definitely going ahead. We are monitoring the Met Office closely and the rain should be over by the time the race starts at 11.30am.

“The riders will ride regardless of the weather – they really look forward to our beach race.”

The only thing that may be impacted by heavy downpours is additional activities taking place on the day.

The event, which usually attracts thousands of spectators, is particularly poignant this year as it marks its 40th anniversary and Mr Hope revealed the club is looking forward to celebrating the milestone.

Cllr Alex Fuhrmann will also be at the event on Sunday, describing it as ‘one of the crown jewels in the Weymouth event calendar.’

He praised the event for the incredible money that it raises for charity and the ‘thousands that it brings into the town.’

The Weymouth Beach Motocross, which began in 1984, is free to attend and this milestone anniversary will feature a fantastic line-up of races, family-friendly activities, and fundraising efforts for the Lions Club.

Racing starts at 11.30am, although visitors are welcome from 10am.

During the day, audiences can watch skilled riders compete on the challenging beach track, showcasing talent in various race categories.

On the day of the event, all vehicles will be banned from driving along part of The Esplanade and part of Custom House Quay, in both directions between 8am and 5pm.

Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or can use Pilgrims Way for access to Custom House Quay

Weymouth Beach will also be closed from Weymouth Pavilion to the Jubilee Clock for the race preparation and racing from Saturday October 19 at 8am until Sunday, October 20 at 7pm.

The remainder of the beach will remain open, and dogs are also permitted.
