A major Dorset event returns today.

Weymouth Beach Motocross is preparing to put pedal to the metal and be an ‘unforgettable day’ as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.

The event, hosted by the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club and Purbeck Motocross Club, will take place today at Weymouth Beach with a race start at 11.30am, although visitors are welcome from 10am.

It usually attracts big crowds and provides an economic boost for the town during a quieter part of the year.

The event, which began in 1984 and is free to attend, will feature a fantastic line-up of races, family-friendly activities, and fundraising efforts for the Lions Club.

Heavy rain is forecast for this morning but it's expected to clear up into the afternoon.

The rain may affect spectator numbers today - but riders will still compete whatever the weather.

During the day, audiences can watch skilled riders compete on the challenging beach track, showcasing talents in various race categories.

The Lions club will be hosting raffles and accepting charitable donations on the day and there will also be a range of activities, games, food stalls and merchandise vendors present.

On the day of the event, all vehicles will be banned from driving along part of The Esplanade and part of Custom House Quay, in both directions between 8am and 5pm.

Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or can use Pilgrims Way for access to Custom House Quay

Weymouth Beach will also be closed from Weymouth Pavilion to the Jubilee Clock until 7pm.

The remainder of the beach will remain open, and dogs are also permitted.
