A date for planned maintenance on Weymouth Town Bridge has yet to be confirmed as 'investigation works' are still being carried out.

Dorset Council identified localised corrosion on parapets on the 94-year-old bridge in April and announced it would be surveying the damage this autumn ahead of maintenance work.

Parapets are safety barriers that are installed on the edge of a bridge, retaining wall or similar structure with a vertical drop, providing protection for vehicles and pedestrians.

The date back to the 1930s and were last painted in 2012.

It was understood that the maintenance work would be carried out at some point between between September 23 and November 15 - forcing one lane to close on the bridge - and a temporary traffic lights put in place.

However, the council has now confirmed that from Monday, October 21, work will be carried out underneath the bridge to check on the condition of the parapets on the bridge, with a view to carrying out the needed maintenance in the new year.

A Dorset Council spokesperson said: “Our survey works are continuing so we do not have a date for the planned maintenance work yet. We will be under the bridge working from a pontoon week commencing 21 October to carry out our survey.

“The bridge will remain open to vehicles during the survey and mariners have been contacted by Weymouth Harbour regarding these investigation works.”

Maintenance on the bridge in 2022 and in 2023 saw road closures put in place as repairs carried out to welds on the surface of the bridge were done.
