Two inmates broke a prison officer's jaw in a premeditated attack at a young offenders institute.
Jamaal Newman, aged 20, appeared in Weymouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 9, charged with an affray and causing actual bodily harm.
These charges relate to an incident at the HM Young Offenders Institute on Portland on October 14, 2023, with another prisoner who will appear in court at a later date.
The incident occurred whilst Newman, of Keynsham near Bristol, was interned at the young offenders institute on October 14, 2023.
Elizabeth Valera, prosecuting, told the court that the victim was a male prison officer. The two inmates managed to get him to come over to their cell, at which point they assaulted him.
The prison officer received numerous injuries, including a broken jaw.
The court heard when other officers tried to rescue their fellow, the two men continued their behaviour, throwing a locker door at the officers.
Furthermore, the court heard that this attack was pre-arranged between Newman and the other defendant.
Ian Brazier, mitigating, said: "He accepts that he is in quite a lot of trouble for this. He knows there is music to be faced."
Newman, who pleaded guilty to the charges, will next appear in Bournemouth Crown Court on November 8 for sentencing.
