Residents in Weymouth are supportive of a lowered speed limit along what has been described as a 'dangerous' road.
Dorset Council is proposing introducing a new 30mph limit on the A353 Littlemoor Road from the area of the Bincombe Bumps roundabout to near the eastern entrance of Louviers Road - a stretch of about 1,180 metres.
This stretch - which includes the very busy area at the western entrance of Louviers Road near the shopping centre - is currently 40mph.
The proposal comes in light of the huge Lovell Homes' 'Bincombe Park' housing development under construction on the northern side of Littlemoor Road. New turnings into the development are also being built.
The statement of reasons for a reduction in speed limit, according to Dorset Council, is to regulate or reduce the speed of vehicles to ‘a level which drivers can readily meet the general dangers which may be expected on these roads.’
The new limit is a proposal which is currently out for consultation before a final decision is made.
Weymouth town councillors will get a chance to comment on the plan at a planning and licensing meeting tonight.
Local residents were supportive when approached by the Echo.
Diane Mills said: "As a motorist, I would agree to a lower speed limit. It seems like a quite sensible idea. I don't think it will stop people speeding if the limit is lowered though."
Mr Parry said: "It's a very busy and very fast road. I propose that they should install a crossing there to make it safe. People come flying off the roundabout so maybe 30mph speed limits are a good thing, and will maybe alert drivers.
"With around a 20 per cent increase in population it's going to be chaos to cross. Something needs to be put in place or it's going to be a nightmare."
Mr Hughes added: "It will be better as a 30 as there is heavy traffic and it's dangerous getting out of the junctions at the shops and at Louviers Road."
A resident of Louviers Road said: "I think a 40 limit is enough. What is really needed around here are roundabouts as unless you are going with traffic, it's tough to get out of my road."
He said: “This is something we have been pushing for in the last several years.
"It's far too fast considering the new estate being built to the north and no proper crossing has been put in place. This should hopefully help to ease exiting the junctions on and off the main Littlemoor estate.
"It's time to make the whole of Littlemoor Road 30mph instead of 30mph on two ends and 40mph in the middle.
"Crossing this road is only going to get more frequent.”
