A large vehicle has caught fire and is blocking a road in both directions.

Fire crews are dealing with the lorry fire on the A303 at Deverills Back, Chicklade.

The fire, which started in the lorry cab, spread to the straw that the vehicle was carrying.

Though this is in Wiltshire, it is causing significant traffic delays for those in Dorset trying to go in that direction as the road is closed in both directions.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called 7.41am today with reports of a large vehicle fire on the A303 between the A350 junction and Chicklade.

"Crews from Shaftesbury, Warminster, Mere and the water carrier from Wilton were mobilised along with an appliance from Wincanton (Devon & Somerset FRS) and on arrival found a lorry carrying straw alight.

"Crews are working to extinguish the fire which started in the cab area and spread to the straw load.

"The road is closed in both directions whilst the crews work to put the fire out."

A spokesperson for the Shaftesbury Fire Station said: "We are currently dealing with a large vehicle fire on the A303 at Deverills Back, Chicklade.

"This is causing significant traffic delays as the road is closed in both directions.

"Please avoid the area and find alternative routes."
