Travellers have set up suspected unauthorised camp at Weymouth’s park and ride site.

Around five caravans and motorhomes were seen in the Mount Pleasant Park and Ride near Mercery Road today, September 13, at around 1pm.

There were also dogs seen running around the site.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: "Dorset Council officers have attended the unauthorised encampment at Weymouth Park and Ride, and asked the occupants to leave.

"Dorset Police will now issue a section 62 notice, requiring them to vacate the car park by 10am tomorrow morning (Saturday, September 14). Our transit site at Piddlehinton will be open to receive them if they wish to remain in the county."

Previously when travellers set up camp at the same site, Dorset Council worked alongside Dorset Police to issue an order for them to leave.

In April, the council renewed the consent for a transit site for the gypsy and traveller community in Piddle Valley.

The site, adjacent to the Piddlehinton Enterprise Park at Church Hill has been a designated transit site for several years and will now be available this year for up to 25 caravans until September 30.

It is managed by Dorset Council separately from the permanent gypsy site in the village and is designed to deal with those travelling around the country.
