A memorial service will take place to remember those who died when a ship sank off Portland.

St Andrew’s Church in Southwell, will be holding its annual service to commemorate the sinking of the SS Avalanche in 1877.

It will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 4pm.

The ship had departed with 63 passengers and 34 crew on board. Faced with stormy conditions, it collided with the SS Forest Queen, which had 21 crew members on board, about fifteen miles off Portland Bill.

Tragically the Avalanche sank within three minutes, killing all passengers and 31 crew members.

The Forest also sank and 12 crew members drowned.

People can gather and light a candle in honour of those lost in the 1877 disaster and reflect on their lives.

A DVD of the anchor's recovery will also be available for purchase at £5.00.
