Access to recycling centres will be affected by road closures during this month's Ironman race.

Both Weymouth and Dorchester’s Household Recycling Centres (HRC) will be directly affected by the event on Sunday, September 15.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council Waster Services said: "Weymouth HRC on Preston Beach Road will be closed all day.

"Local residents are being urged to take their waste to Portland’s HRC, or wait until the Weymouth site reopens on Monday September 16.

"Dorchester HRC at Louds Mill will be open, but access is likely to be disrupted until early afternoon.

"Local residents are advised to either delay their journey until later that day, visit Wareham’s HRC, or wait to visit Dorchester HRC until Monday, September 16."

The annual triathlon race, considered the ultimate one-day test of endurance, comprises three parts: a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile cycle and a 13.1-mile run.

The popular event attracts thousands of athletes from all over the UK and Europe and greatly boosts the local economy.

Temporary road closures will be in place on the day for the cycling and running legs  with many householders close to the race course receiving information through their doors about road closures.
