Police officers responded to three shoplifting incidents across Weymouth and have made a number of arrests.

One ‘wanted’ woman remains in custody after police were able to compile evidence for two offences of shoplifting in the town centre.

It comes after officers from Weymouth and Portland Police received reports of a female shoplifting in town.

The police were not able to locate her at the time, but she was later arrested by colleagues from the Neighbourhood Enforcement Team.

Later, the team was called to The Range by a CCTV operator who had identified two well-known individuals who had been shoplifting.

The pair were detained nearby by a BID Ranger and CSAS officers before police arrived.

According to officers, ‘the female involved had made a good her escape before they arrived’ but both were subsequently located quickly and arrested.

The goods were recovered and returned to the store and the two are being dealt with for these offences and a couple of other offences they are linked to.

The police then received a final report of a possible shoplifting incident in Asda on Newstead Road.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: “It was a busy day (Friday, September 6), for the Neighbourhood Team today, we were straight out to reports of a female shoplifting in town, she was also wanted.

"We didn't locate her at the time, but she has since been located and arrested by colleagues from the Neighbourhood Enforcement Team and we have compiled evidence for two offences of shoplifting to put to her whilst in custody.

“We were then called to The Range by the CCTV operator who had identified two well-known individuals having been shoplifting in there, they were detained nearby by the BID Ranger and CSAS officers prior to our arrival.

"Despite the female involved making good her escape before we got there, they have both been located quickly and arrested. The goods were recovered and returned to the store.

"These two are in custody and are being dealt with for these offences and a couple of other offences they are linked to this evening.

“We are working in partnership with Weymouth BID and the local shops to try and address a number of recent complaints regarding shoplifters in the town centre and have made a number of arrests for individuals involved.

"We will continue with this and making arrests to try and drive down the number of offences being committed.”
