A society will honour a former Dorset mayor with its annual service.
The Thomas Fowell Buxton society are holding their annual memorial service on Bincleaves Green at the Buxton Monument in Weymouth this Sunday (September 8).
Starting at 3pm, the service will look to honour the memory of the Buxton, who was an MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, helping to lead the parliamentary party in the abolition of slavery in the British Dominion. The Act of Parliament abolish slavery was achieved in August 1833 and came into effect on 1st August 1834.
Buxton also worked for changes in prison reform during the nineteenth century when MP.
The deputy mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson will open proceedings, whilst Dr Carl Whitehouse will lead the service.
There will be a small merchandise stall selling copies of recent presentations as well as monumental marmalade and seasonal preserves.
