A team of veteran scooter riders has raised nearly £20,000 after completing their 2,500 mile trip around Britain for a cause close to their hearts.

Dave Harrison and Alex Bateman, who are from Weymouth, accompanied Sussex couple Henry Smith and Alison Bowen on a ten-day journey around the coast of mainland Britain - all on 60-year-old Italian scooters.

The tour was a trip down memory lane for the scooterists - stopping at 28 towns that hosted scooter rallies in the 1980s - while also raising money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The charity was chosen as the disease has touched many of the adventurers' family members.

The tour started in Brighton on Wednesday, August 14, stopping in towns such as Aberystwyth, Bournemouth, Margate, Torquay, and many more.

They rode into Weymouth at around 5pm on Thursday, August 22. They were accompanied by other riders who had travelled from Bridport to join the group for their journey into Weymouth.

While the veterans had to overcome challenging weather, they also got to take in "fantastic sights" as well as meeting up friends, old and new.

A special night time event was held at the Centenary Club in Weymouth, organised by the Lowriders Scooter Club to raise additional funds.

The initial fundraising target was £5,000. The group smashed this target, raising nearly four times the amount.

Alison Bowen said: "To date we have raised £19,373.  This is a breath-taking 387% of our original target. I’d really like to call out the Lowriders SC who have supported us right from the start; as well as many individual donations of money and auction items from members and their families."

"The club also contributed a massive amount through collections, raffles and shaking a bucket - all of which they donated to the total raised so far.

"They also collected monies to help Dave and Alex defray the costs incurred on the tour (fuel, oil, hotels etc). We cannot thank them enough."
