A history talk will explore the legend of an ancient priestess who defied social and gender barriers.

Dorchester and District Gardening Club is inviting Susan Vincent, who has a MA in Classical Studies, for a talk about “Pompeii: Eumachia in Pompeii at the time of Augustus."

The evening will delve into how this Roman woman of non-imperial/non-aristocratic descent became an important figure in a community, serving as the public priestess of Venus Pompeiana in Pompeii.

She is also known for financing the construction of the Eumachia building which housed the guild of the fullers, the largest group of tradesmen in the city.

The talk will be held on Wednesday, September 4 at St George’s Church Hall on High Street, Fordington, Dorchester. Doors will open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.

Entry is free for members of the club and costs £4 on the door for visitors. There is also a bring and buy stall and a draw, with tea, coffee and biscuits available afterwards.
