ONGOING roadworks on a main Weymouth route are making life a misery for two elderly residents who can no longer catch a bus from outside their home.

The OAPS can no longer access two bus stops outside Hardys Court on Dorchester Road that are closed due to the roadworks.

Angela Wood’s wheelchair-bound 89-year-old mother and 95-year-old mother-in-law both live in the flats on Dorchester Road in Weymouth and the pair rely heavily on buses to get about.

The works are being carried out by Openreach to repair a manhole, with temporary traffic lights in place since around August 12.

Angela, also of Weymouth, claims that she has not seen any works taking place for at least two and a half weeks.

She said: “My mother-in-law is not going out so much because she can’t get the bus from outside her home.

"She won’t be able to go off on her own and do what she does. It’s just ridiculous.

“My mum is in a wheelchair, and we took her out the other day. It took us around 10 to 15 minutes to walk to the next bus stop at Lodmoor.

“The works have been holding up traffic and has caused two bus stops to close. Nothing seems to have been done in the two and a half weeks that the temporary traffic measures have been there. It is particularly impacting elderly people that use the bus.

“We are used to traffic lights popping up here and there, but not for more than two weeks with nothing happening.”

A spokesperson for Openreach said: “We’re sorry for any disruption here. Our engineers are working hard to replace an underground chamber and cover. It’s important they do this to make sure it’s safe for members of the public and our teams that work in the area.

“We’re doing our best to minimise disruption and will get the work completed as quickly as possible.”

Despite the timetable still being shown at both bus stops, there are signs which read: “This bus stop will be closed until works have finished. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to your travel plans.”

However, a number of people have still been waiting at the bus stop and Angela explained that she has personally had to notify them that the bus does not stop at that location.
