Hundreds of pounds of items were found in the boot of suspected shoplifters' car in Weymouth town centre.

They were caught on CCTV and subsequently stopped by police.

A boot full of items was seized by police, along with their car which officers discovered was uninsured.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "Officers on patrol were made aware of a male and female shoplifting in the town centre this afternoon after contact was made from our local CCTV Operative.

"The male and female were seen to make off in a car, after loading the boot with suspected stolen items, trying to make a great escape.

"Luckily, NPT officers were there to track the vehicle and two traffic units in the area, assisted us with stopping the vehicle.

"Lo and behold, there was a considerable amount of stock worth hundreds of pounds in their car boot, with no proof of purchase and was seized.

"The offenders will be assisting us with our enquiries.

"Also, very interestingly, the driver was not insured to drive this failed getaway car, so it was seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 for no insurance."
