AN application for three commercial greenhouses at the Island Nurseries site at Upwey, has been turned down.

The business has asked Dorset Council to consider whether it would be allowed to build the structures without the need for a full planning application for each.

But council officers ruled that the ‘prior approval’ route, should not apply. Weymouth Town Council had supported the applications for the garden centre, which has been trading on the site for more than 40 years.

The Dorset Council ruling will mean the business having to go through the full planning process, if it wishes to proceed, the applications then being open for public and statutory comment, before being decided, a more vigorous and expensive route.

Previous refusals for the site’s development have been based around the flood risk at the location and a, technical, discussion about the classification of garden centre greenhouses under planning law.

Other Weymouth and Portland area planning decisions include a change of use from a commercial premises to a two-bed flat in St Mary Street which received a similar prior approval refusal from Dorset Council planners.
