TWO shoplifters were chased by police after allegedly stealing items from a sports shop in Weymouth.

Officers spotted two women who were suspected of shoplifting from Sports Direct in Weymouth and chased them in cars and on foot before arresting them.

Police said the two women were wanted by police for suspected violent disorder at protests in Bristol.

One of the women was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following the chase.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "A Town Centre Neighbourhood Officer was conducting foot patrols on Weymouth Esplanade when he saw a vehicle pass him with two females inside who had allegedly shoplifted in Sports Direct and made off.

"The vehicle was located on the main road in traffic and failed to stop when challenged by Police, the vehicle was dumped in Morrison's car park on Dorchester Road, and both individuals decamped and made off on foot.

"Following a foot pursuit, both were located by the officer and detained for a search in Morrisons car park.

"Following a positive search both females were arrested for shoplifting and going equipped.

"One of the females was further arrested for failing to stop, dangerous driving, having cloned plates and perverting the course of justice.

"Checks on both females have subsequently shown that they are also wanted for Violent Disorder in relation to recent protests in Bristol.

"They have been arrested for these offences too.

"Both are currently occupying cells at Weymouth Custody and will be in front of courts shortly."
