Plans for seven homes on Weymouth harbourside have received no objections from  councillors.

If approved by Dorset Council, it will result in the demolition of the existing Kwik Fit garage on Westwey Road, opposite the town’s main marina.

The homes are proposed to be in two terraced blocks, one with four homes, the other with three, each of the units with three bedrooms and both blocks of two storeys and each with small gardens.

It will use existing road access with associated landscaping and parking for 14 cars.

A planning agent, acting for the site owners, says the centre could readily be moved elsewhere in the area with what it describes as a “substantial over-supply” of suitable employment sites in the area.

The ten-year lease for the site ended more than a year ago.

It points out that there are several other garages offering similar services within a mile radius.

The plans were discussed at a meeting of the planning and licensing committee at Weymouth Town Council on Tuesday.

Cllr Peter Dickenson said: "It is noted that the Weymouth Civic Society is disappointed that it isn't part of the master plan. They have no objections but it is a shame it is not all-encompassing.

"As we are losing the tyre and exhaust centre, we may be losing employment.

"However I have no objection

Tim Young said: "It has been derelict since the gas works."

Committee members submitted a comment of "no objection" to the plans and it will now be submitted to Dorset Council.

The committee acts as an advisory board and can submit comments to the plans, but Dorset Council will have the overall decision on whether it is approved.
