A man fled the scene after removing bottle tags from alcoholic drinks with a hammer.
While out on Operation Track patrols in Weymouth town centre yesterday afternoon, officers from Weymouth and Portland police were alerted to a man who was removing tags from bottles of alcohol in a shop with a hammer.
A woman was also reportedly seen instructing the man how to remove the tags.
When the officers arrived, the man fled the scene.
The woman attempted to flee on a bicycle but was caught by police and subsequently arrested for theft, handling stolen goods and possession of an offensive weapon.
The man is known to the police and will be spoken to at a later date.
A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland police said: "Yesterday afternoon whilst on Operation Track patrols throughout the town centre, officers were flagged down to a man who was removing tags from bottles of alcohol with a hammer.
"There was also a woman who was instructing the man how to remove the tags. Officers attended but on seeing the police, the man made off from the area.
"The woman was located just before she attempted to make off on a bicycle and was arrested for theft, handling stolen goods and possession of an offensive weapon.
"The male is known to us and will be spoken to at a later date. Shoplifting will not be tolerated in our town and offenders will be dealt with robustly."
