Monster pumpkins weighing over more than 1,000lbs will be among the sights to see at this year’s county show.

The Dorset County Show, which takes place on the weekend of Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8 at the Dorchester Showgrounds will see the return of its popular weight class, the heaviest pumpkins.

Many of these pumpkins spend more than 100 days on the vine before their show debut, with a huge amount of care that goes into achieving the size. Many are watered more than 12 times a day.

To put size into perspective, many weigh more than 1,000lbs, which is the equivalent to 11 bags of cement or a bull head shark.

Arriving at the show in trailers, the pumpkins will be on display all weekend, with the champion announced on the Sunday.

It’s not only pumpkins that are weighing in. The heaviest onion class is also attracting entries. Giant onions can weigh in at nine kilograms, which could be compared to the same as a watermelon or a bowling ball.

The County Show acts as a celebration of rural life in Dorset and welcomes around 60,000 visitors annually. This year it will welcome Atkinsons Action Horses, IMPs Motorcycle Display Team, Tomahawk Throwing, horse logging, Axeman and livestock.
