Portland-based windsurfer Emma Wilson is guaranteed an Olympic medal today after dominating through qualification.
The 25-year-old finished top of the standings after officials decided to abandon the final six races of qualifying due to a lack of wind in Marseille on Thursday, August 1.
Wilson has won eight of the 14 races so far and leads the pack by 81 points over Israel’s Sharon Kantor in second.
The Portland windsurfer has therefore been advanced straight into today’s final, a new format which benefits the leader after qualifying, where three surfers will compete for the medals.
Under the new format introduced for these Olympics, the best racer in the qualifying series goes straight to the final, while the remaining qualifiers battle through the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
The final begins at around 1.20pm today.
Wilson said: “I go into the final guaranteed a medal which is the best you can do in this format so I’m very happy and I’ll give it my all,” said Wilson.
“I need to do what I’ve done all week. I’ll go and have some food, some physio, rest and recover. I’ll do what I’ve done all week as it’s been working.”
Men’s windsurfer Sam Sills also earned his place in the medal series and will have to race his way through the quarter-finals and semi-finals to claim a spot on the podium.
Both medal races in the skiff category were postponed until Friday, with the men’s race, which includes Portland-based James Peters and Fynn Sterritt, abandoned twice due to a sudden drop in wind.
