A driver has surrendered an axe found in his car during a police search.

Officers from Dorset Police were out patrolling in Weymouth as part of its 100 Days of Summer initiative yesterday (Tuesday, July 30) when they were called to a report of a traffic offence in New Street  shortly before 11am.

During this patrol a man had his car seized for a number of driving offences. This included driving without a valid licence, having no insurance and no valid MOT on the car.

A search of the vehicle also revealed an axe which officers say the driver had a 'legitimate reason' for carrying the item in his car.

However, the driver decided to surrender the axe to the police for destruction.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "On Tuesday 30th July, officers from the County Neighbourhood Enforcement Team assisted their Neighbourhood Policing Team colleagues with the 100 Days of Summer patrols.

"While on patrol, officers have issued a male driver with a traffic offence report, for driving without a valid licence, having no insurance, and having no valid m.o.t on his vehicle, which resulted in its seizure.

"During the same incident, an axe was recovered from within the vehicle. On this occasion, there was a legitimate reason for the item being there, but the owner felt it was best to surrender it to police for destruction."
