Firefighters rushed to the scene after farmland in west Dorset caught fire.

Firefighters from Dorset, Devon and Somerset were part of a major fire service deployment after a field of cut crop stubble caught fire on Monday.

Hose reel jets, fogging units, scotty backpacks, knapsacks, beaters were all used as Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) tackled the blaze in Abbots Wootton.

The fire service immediately mobilised crews from Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Beaminster and the water carrier from Yeovil at 3.34pm.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed that there was a large fire and called for assistance from Axminster, Bridport, Maiden Newton, Crewkerne and Taunton fire stations.

Due to the wind the fire was tracking up a hill with firefighters having to working shifts to tackle the blaze.

A second water carrier was also requested from Bridgwater Fire Station but this was stood down before it arrived.

Once the fire was put out firefighters remained to dampen down the ground to avoid it reigniting.

A spokesperson for DWFRS: "Crews were faced with a large fire in a field of cut crop stubble that was tracking up a hill being driven by wind.

"Crews worked in arduous conditions rotating between them using hose reel jets, beaters and scotty backpacks, as well as the fogging units on the smaller offroad vehicles to extinguish the fire.

"Once the fire was extinguish crews continued to use the offroad vehicles to damp down the area to prevent any further re-ignition, given the ongoing warm weather we are having.

"The fire is believed to have been accidental.

"This was again another great example of our ability to work with crews across the border and another reason why we regularly train with one another to be aware of capabilities in our surrounding area."
