Crowds were delighted by sunshine, ice cream and family fun to support a charity 'really important' to Weymouth and Portland.

The RNLI fun day at Nothe Gardens is part of the popular week-long lifeboat week which this year comes amid the national charity's 200th anniversary.

The fun day included musical acts, fun for the children, and a coastguard and lifeboat display in the evening.

Amy Flux from Weymouth attended with her two kids Beau and Abel. She said: "We love the RNLI. We came here last year as well.

"We have been enjoying it so far - sunshine and ice cream, what more can you ask?"

Tracy Wheeler and her grandson attended with Courtney Gallium and her son. Tracy said: "It is about supporting the RNLI, and I am looking forward to enjoying the sun."

Paula Hartley from Weymouth attended with her grandkids. She said: "It has been lovely. 

"We try and come every year because the RNLI is really important to Weymouth and Portland so we like to support it.

"It being sunny brings everyone out to raise as much as they can."

Fiona Wilson, husband Sonny and their son Toby were looking forward to seeing the boat display and fireworks in the evening.

Fiona said: "It is lovely and for a great cause as well. The weather has come out and hopefully, it will be like that for the whole week."

Head of fundraising for the Weymouth and Portland RNLI and event organiser Teresa Drage said: "I am well chuffed with how it is going. This year we have gone a bit bigger, and it just looks amazing.

"It is nice to see people up here milling around and all seem to be enjoying it. It is also great to see all the different establishments that have come to support us as a charity. It is quite humbling.

"The weather has been on our side completely since the start of the week, and hopefully this week will be really good."

Weymouth is one of the RNLI’s busiest lifeboat stations on England’s south coast, operating two lifeboats – Ernest and Mabel, a Severn class all-weather lifeboat, and Jack and Phyl Cleare, a B class Atlantic 85.

Celebrations were originally due to kick off on Sunday with the Red Devils dropping in, the British Army's Parachute Display Team. 

However, it was cancelled. Weymouth RNLI were informed that this was due to "safety reasons" - however no further information was given. 

There are a number of events still to take place this week including:

Tuesday: 

7pm-9pm - The Leggomen will be performing at the Boat Café on Weymouth Beach.

Wednesday: 

2pm - A crabbing competition which is always a huge hit with families. Entry is £2 and participants should bring their own buckets and bait.

From 7pm - Second display by the lifeboat crews and local coastguard at Bowleaze Cove 

Thursday:

5.30pm - The Official Test Centre, at Portland is supporting the event by hosting paddleboarding sessions which need to be booked in advance.

Friday: 

5.30pm - Live music by Slight Return at the Nothe Tavern on Barrack Road.

8pm - Pub quiz at the Nothe Tavern on Barrack Road, entry is £2 per person, or £6 per team of four.

Saturday -  Final Day: 

From 10.30am to 4pm - The lifeboat station will be hosting an open day, where visitors can meet the volunteer crew of Weymouth lifeboat, take a tour of our Severn class all-weather lifeboat Earnest and Mabel and the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Jack and Phyl Cleare.
