A FEMALE Police Community Support Officer was threatened and assaulted by street drinkers on Weymouth seafront.

A man has been arrested for assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence after the PCSO was targeted.

As previously reported, a man was moved on from the seafront for being 'abusive and threatening'.

The PCSO in question was called to Weymouth seafront on Wednesday to a complaint about street drinkers.

Police said the individuals are 'all housed in the local community and had no reason for being in the area'.

The PCSO was then subjected to threatening comments by the group.

One man has been arrested and subsequently charged with assaulting an emergency worker.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "Following an incident involving a female PCSO on Weymouth Esplanade, enquiries were conducted and it was determined there was sufficient evidence to investigate a complaint.

"The individual involved was identified by a town centre Neighbourhood Policing Team officer and subsequently arrested for a public order offence and assaulting an emergency worker.

"Following a search of the male post-arrest, he was further arrested for possession of a Class A drug.

"He was taken to Weymouth Custody and subsequently charged.

"Violence against women and females always has and always will continue to be of the utmost priority."
