A grandmother has opened a new takeaway restaurant after being inspired by her granddaughter.

Terri Redhead, 54, moved to the area 18 years ago from Warwickshire with her husband. After working through the years in hospitality from pubs and holiday homes, she opened up Nana’s Potato Wedges at Trinity House along Trinity Street in Dorchester.

Speaking about the idea behind the restaurant, Mrs Redhead said: “The way the idea for Nana’s came about is when my granddaughter Summer was diagnosed with Coeliac disease at the age of three.

“She’s now 14 and since she has been growing up, we have always found it difficult to just go out and grab something quickly to eat, or take away something to have at home with her.

“I said, one day I will open up a gluten-free takeaway. Summer has been the whole inspiration behind it.

“It’s amazing, I’m really loving it as it’s something I’ve wanted to do for so long- it’s like a dream come true.”

On top of the names, and the menu, Summer’s influence has also spread to the takeaway artistically, as all illustrations and drawings of potatoes on the menu were drawn by her. She also works alongside her 'Nana' at the takeaway.

The takeaway has opened at Trinity House, close to the Sugar Shack and Convivial Rabbit. Mrs Redhead, said: “The opportunity for the place came up in May, and my husband and I had a look and thought we could do something with this.

“It took us six weeks to get it to a nice standard and we have seating inside as well, but it will predominantly be a takeaway.”

To fit with the gluten-free option, the menu consists of loaded wedges with a variety of toppings from bolognaise, bacon and cheese, beef and vegetable chilli, as well as a special which includes Piri-Piri Chicken.

Mrs Redhead said she has ideas for the future: “We’re looking to do a lot of different things in the future, and I plan on offering a gluten-free wrap and pizzas soon.

Speaking about the reaction from the town since she opened earlier this month, Mrs Redhead, said: “It’s been really good, especially when they realise that the whole concept of the place is gluten-free we have had really good feedback.”
