Police have issued words of advice following a series of thefts from allotments in Dorchester.

Dorchester Town Council informed the police that there have been recent thefts from the allotments on St Georges Road.

Police say patrols will continue in the area, but have issued words of advice for people to protect their sheds, and other outdoor property:

  • Secure access to shed or garage by closing gates and securing them with alarmed padlocks and using thorny bushes next to the walls and fences.
  • Visibly mark the contents of your shed. Make a note of the serial numbers and photograph valuable plants and ornaments.
  • Install CCTV or external security lights as a deterrent
  • Use strong padbars and close shackle padlocks on doors. Windows should be secure with locks or grilles. Secure door hinges with coach bolts or non-return screws.
  • Chain cycles, mowers, ladders and tools are a strong anchorage point
  • Alarm the property
  • Join a Home Watch scheme
  • Check insurance policies to see if your household policy covers theft from gardens and outbuildings.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “The Town Council have advised Dorchester Neighbourhood Policing Team that there have been recent thefts from the allotments in St Georges Road Dorchester. Allotments, due to their often dark remote locations, are difficult places to keep secure.

“Please consider taking valuable items home with you. Patrols will continue in the area.”
