Two ‘known shoplifters’ have been arrested after more than £300 worth of goods were stolen.

Police were called to reports of two known shoplifters inside a Weymouth town centre express store shoplifting yesterday morning (Wednesday, July 24).

According to police, the pair exited the convenience store with approximately £300 to £350 worth of items, which includes bottles of alcohol from Gin and Whiskey to washing powder and detergent before making their way down Commercial Road.

After being found hiding in a bush, both were arrested on suspicion of theft and were taken to Weymouth Police Station where they are in custody.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “This morning Town Centre Neighbourhood Policing Officers attended reports of two known shoplifters inside a Town Centre Express Store shoplifting. The two individuals exited with approximately £300-£350 worth of items and made there way down Commercial Road.

“Officers located the two hiding behind bushes on by the harbour side and arrested both on suspicion of Theft. They were taken to Weymouth Police Station and are currently in custody.

“Both individuals are known to Police, and housed locally to the town centre, however not street drinkers. Both individuals have the means to pay for items but are actively choosing not to, and taking it upon themselves to commit crime. This equals a trip to custody and will not be tolerated.”
