A brand-new knitted display pays homage to childhood memories of Neapolitan ice creams being sold from bicycles.
The Knitoholics - an anonymous 'yarn bombing group' who frequently decorate Weymouth quayside with their creations - have been hard at work for months preparing their fabulous summer display which they have labelled ‘Ice Cream Dreams.’
The incredible display has been met with a lot of love from residents and tourists alike and it can be seen on Weymouth’s South Harbourside on Cove Row.
The group is made up of four women and ‘one very talented granddaughter’ who helps out with the designs and sketches.
A spokesperson for the group said: “It took us literally months to create this display as the ice creams and ice lollies had to be specially designed and knitted by trial and error, and then a framework had to be invented to support them.
“The bike with its basket full of ice-creams was measured and re-measured until we were dizzy.”
As well as childhood memories, the group have also revealed that further inspiration has come from ‘buying their grandchildren the legendary giant ice-creams from the kiosk at Newtons Cove and seeing their faces and wondering if they could knit something that would have the same effect on adults.’
The spokesperson added: “We love to make people smile and enjoy seeing the comments.
“It’s also nice when we are sometimes caught in the act of putting a display out and people ask, ‘are you the ladies that make them’ and watching their faces when we say 'yes but don’t tell anyone' - they seem to like being part of the conspiracy of our desire to remain anonymous.”
Each of the members has their own favourite creation which the yarn-bombing group have created throughout the years, however they all agreed that they loved the display of service men and women created for Remembrance Day.
This is closely followed by the lifeboat display ‘which was stolen almost straight away,’ and the mermaids ‘which lasted a bit longer’ and of course the Wallace and Gromit display which was described as their ‘most ambitious to date.’
