Police have warned of 'devastating consequences' for people who trespass on railway lines.

It comes after reports of people - thought to be youngsters - getting onto the line and also, shockingly, "leaving items on the tracks".

A warning has been issued by officers from North Dorset Police who urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers.

Officers did not disclose the location of the trespassing incidents.

The Waterloo-Exeter (West of England) line, operated by South Western Railway, passes through north Dorset with stations at Gillingham and Sherborne.

North Dorset Police said: "We have had reports of people playing on the railway line and leaving items on the tracks.

"Trespassing on the railway or land running alongside can have devastating consequences from a £1,000 fine to life-changing, potentially fatal injuries.

"There are also the hidden costs in the effect on loved ones, the railway staff and the wider community.

"If you see someone trespassing or 'playing' on the railway line please call 999.

"Network Rail have a wide range of resources to help you have a conversation with your children and loved ones about the dangers associated with the railway.
