A community has hailed an ‘ideal’ convenience store after its grand opening.

The Manor Park Premier Convenience Store on Mellstock Avenue in Dorchester was officially opened on Friday, July 19 at around 3.25pm.

Swathes of schoolchildren, parents and local residents flocked to the shop, which marked the occasion by offering free coffee, drinks, sweets, goody bags, and a chance to win a Fit-Bit.

Goody bags included a bag of sweet and salty popcorn, an apple, isotonic drink, chocolate bourbons and a tin of baked beans.

It is significant for the area, as the nearest shop, which was located on nearby Monmouth Road, closed in 2018, leaving residents without a quick means to visit a shop at their convenience.

The store was opened up by 96-year-old Mellstock Avenue resident and former headteacher, Catherine Marr. She said: “It’s very useful to have this in the area, and gives me more independence as I don’t have to ask for help getting to the shops in town, or Tesco’s."

“It’s also ideal for the school pick-up times or when you don’t want to go into town. There are also a lot of elderly people around here so it’s really needed in the area.”

One Dad who was picking his child up from nearby St Osmund’s Middle School, said: “It’s pretty important, not just to the area, but also in terms of the school run.”

Another local added: “It’s great for the area, as previously I would have to walk all the way to Tesco’s for my shopping, but now if I need something- it’s there.”

Manager Jagan Nallappan, said: “It’s been all smiles today, everyone is happy through the generations from the school children to the elderly.

“It’s a real local shop, as there was nothing in the area and I think the community is really backing it. All customers are supporting the local community.”

Wayne Bradley, Premier Convenience Store opening manager, said: “It’s been fantastic to see the support today, and the reaction from local Facebook groups has been really positive.

“Just a fantastic store, standards, and owners,” he added.
