Volunteers are being sought to help repair benches in beauty spots after one was targeted by vandals.
The Poundbury Residents’ Association was made aware of damage to one of 19 benches around the development looking out towards Maiden Castle. Photographs show the bench on Centenary Field without the back slats in the picturesque spot frequented by dog walkers and locals.
Inscribed on the bench is a plaque indicating that the bench was donated by the PRA.
Due to other benches on the Great Field, Pummery Square, Holmead Walk play area, Woodlands Crescent play area and Bridport Road also needing maintenance, the group are looking for volunteers to step up to lend 'community support.'
The PRA has confirmed that they can fundraise for any necessary materials to repair the damaged benches and are now looking for volunteers to conduct inspections of the benches and carry out maintenance work where necessary.
Lesley Clark, chair of the PRA, said: “The bench has been deliberately damaged by someone carefully removing all the back slats. We are actively seeking volunteer support from a joiner or carpenter who can repair this.
"The bench is in an idyllic spot with views towards Maiden Castle. PRA benches were established in numerous locations across Poundbury for community use.
“The PRA would like, with community support, to be able to maintain the teak benches around Poundbury which are there for all to use and enjoy.
“Dorchester Town Council have kindly taken over benches on land now adopted by them and our aspiration would be to maintain the remaining benches in good repair until further sites are adopted. We have requested support via our weekly email but I’d love to hear from Echo readers too. Thank you for your support"
The damage has not been reported to Dorset Police.
This is not the only act of vandalism reported in Poundbury in recent months. Earlier this month, residents alerted the police after footballs were kicked towards people’s doors, whilst in May, numerous incidents of anti-social behaviour were reported at the historic site of the Poundbury Camp Hillfort.
