Residents are being urged to report antisocial parking to their local council.
Dorset Police has advised people that if abandoned cars or antisocial parking is annoying them then it should be reported to the local council in the first instance.
Unless the cars have been left in a dangerous place it is not a matter for the police.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We try to help whenever we can, but we're not always the best people to call in every situation.
"If an abandoned car or antisocial parking is getting on your wick you need to call your local council.
"By making the first call the only call you make, you will resolve your issue more quickly and help the police concentrate on keeping your community safer."
