A Weymouth supermarket and petrol station remains shut for a second day following reports of a fire.

Morrisons on Dorchester Road is closed today after staff and customers were evacuated from the store yesterday.

Smoke coming from the store's plant room was caused by an electrical fault, according to the fire service.

One customer, who tried to go into the shop this morning, said: "There was a really nice lady on the door explaining that the shop was still closed. I'm just glad everything is okay."

The closure has also impacted the InPost lockers, as well as the petrol station and store.

A Morrisons spokesman said fridges and freezers in the store have been off for more than 12 hours, therefore to ensure it complies with food hygiene and safety regulations, "all our fresh and frozen produce has to be wasted centrally."

Firefighters arrived at Morrisons at around 11am yesterday and confirmed that an 'electrical fault' had occurred in the store’s plant room to the rear of the building.

The fire service left the scene at 1.30pm, with the problem left in the hands of the store’s electrician.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "There was no obvious fire, it appears to have been a fault in the electrics within the plant room that caused the smoke, but it was left with the store’s electrician."

At present it remains uncertain as to when the store will re-open to shoppers.
