ASYLUM seekers living on the Bibby Stockholm barge at Portland Port walked out in protest to call on the Government to speed up their asylum claims.
A large number of asylum seekers withdrew from meals today and have began a peaceful 2-hour sit-in, in the barge’s outside compound, as they make a plea to the Government to speed up their claims and decisions.
Barge managers are reportedly helping to facilitate a peaceful sit-in which will take place from 12pm until 2pm.
Local residents also held a solidarity vigil for them outside the Port gates.
A spokesperson for Stand Up To Racism Dorset said: "Almost all of the men have been waiting over a year, and many much longer, to know their outcomes.
"This causes significant deterioration in their mental health and well-being, as they wait in limbo, not knowing what their futures hold.
"The men also ask for greater support for their deteriorating mental health during these times.
"Having fled from fear, persecution and often torture in an attempt to find refuge, safety and security, the men wish to be able to live and work in the UK, earn their own livings, pay their own way and contribute to society by paying their taxes.
"They very much appreciate the support they receive, but are very desperate for the UK Government to speed up processes and decisions to allow them to leave this state of limbo behind and begin to build their lives here and contribute to our communities and society."
