TWO Purbeck quarry sites are seeking to make changes – one to add a large extension and the other, at the Trigon landfill site, to vary conditions around a haul road, allowing its retention until March 2034.

The Imerys application, at the Povington ball clay pit, is for a north easterly extension  comes with detailed proposal for the eventual restoration of the 44 hectare site.

If approved the extension, of around 25 per cent, would release around 275,000 tonnes of ball clay on an 11 hectare area together with 60,000 tonnes of sand, over seven to nine years. If approved the decision would continue the operations at the site until September 2036, with restoration taking another year beyond that.

Imerys employ 29 people in Dorset and are indirectly responsible for another ten jobs at Poole Harbour where much of its produce is shipped from. The extension would secure those jobs for longer.

The company’s Povington site is approximately 5km southwest of Wareham, 3.5km to the east of Lulworth and a similar distance west of East Creech.

The business say the proposal would increase daily vehicle movement from 16 a day to 33; 13 for clay, 20 for sand.

A consultation exercise resulted in broad support for the proposals, subject to suitable restoration of the site.
