AN IMPRESSIVE knitted creation celebrating England competing at Euro 2024 has been wrecked in a suspected vandal attack.
The football-themed post box topper depicted two players in home and away England kits on a pitch in front of a St George's Cross flag.
It was the latest creation of an 'anonymous yarn bomber' who decorates the post box in Rylands Lane, Wyke Regis, Weymouth.
In a shocking act of suspected vandalism the player wearing the home kit has been ripped off the topper.
The woman who comes up with the amazing creations understands from someone living nearby that the player was removed and 'thrown into the mud'. It was later put back in place but then disappeared again.
The knitter said: “It does sadden me.
"My idea was to give one each of the footballer dolls to my two grandsons.
“I will knit another one now though, but I would like to have it back.”
Every creation has a much deeper meaning to the creator.
She said: “There’s a meaning behind all of them. The roses in the valentine’s one were for my mum, the lifeboat was for my great grandad who was a coxswain and the football one is for my grandsons who are footie mad.”
She said a seagull had been removed from her lifeboat display which prompted her to make another one. It hasn’t let this deter her from making future post box toppers as she’s already working on her next design.
She added: “I started knitting again because of my grandchildren and the main reason for creating the post box toppers is because my grandchildren saw the one on Portland Road and they thought I made it – so I thought I would do one.
“The first one that I made was a Christmas one and I made pom poms with my grandchildren and put them on the topper.
“I also get my neighbour and mother-in-law involved – I like to try and involve other people; they love it, and my husband helps put them together with me.
“We do get a lot of positive feedback which is really rewarding.”

A lot of time and effort go into the designs.
The creator said: “I sit there in the evenings and knit. I didn’t have a pattern for the shirts so I was trying to get it as close as I could and that’s what took the time.”
