GREGGS is set to open a branch at a petrol station on the A35 in Winterbourne Abbas.

Work has been taking place at the site and it is understood the popular bakery chain - famous for its bakes, sausage rolls and doughnuts - will open to the public on Friday, November 1.

The petrol station remains open but the extension which will house the Greggs unit is undergoing work and is closed off.

A sign above the door says: "Your new shop is coming soon. Join our team. Ask inside for more details."

Greggs would not confirm the opening date but announced they would be launching a site at Winterbourne Abbas in 2024.

A spokesperson said “Greggs is due to open a new shop in Winterbourne Abbas later this year operated by our franchise partner, MFG.

"We look forward to welcoming Greggs fans and new customers to come try our range of tasty bakes, hot drinks and sweet treats.”

A revamp of the petrol station was approved two years ago.

In the changes, the forecourt roof has been raised from 4.7 metres to 5.9 metres above the forecourt level

An extension has also been added with new underground fuel tanks, pipework and other equipment added at the site.

Greggs has two branches in Weymouth town centre, as well as sites at Chickerell, Dorchester, on Portland, Bovington, and Winterborne Zelston.

One motorist, who regularly passes the petrol station, said: "This is great news, there are not too many places to stop off and eat along that stretch of road.

"It is a popular place to eat so I am sure it will do well and there will be plenty of customers passing through there so it should be good news.

"There isn't any Greggs in Dorset that is west of Dorchester so it is nice to have one a bit closer.

"It is nice to have a choice of food when you are stopping off during a long drive."
