An emergency service has shared advice after a small fire broke out at a beach in west Dorset.

Crew from Bridport Fire Station were called to a small fire close to Cogden Beach near Burton Bradstock on Saturday afternoon.

Upon their arrival the crews made their way on foot to access the fire, which was approximately six metres by 15 metres in size. They then needed to call upon an off-road appliance to assist with extinguishing the fire.

A spokesperson for DW Fire said: “One pump from Bridport Fire Station mobilised to a small fire in the open by Cogden Beach.

“On arrival crews made their way on foot to assess the fire. The fire, which was approximately 6 metres by 15 metres in size, wasn’t accessible for our first away pump so our off-road appliance was called in to assist. Crews used one hose reel jet and small tools to extinguish the fire.”

The spokesperson went on to offer advice, saying: “With this fine weather we currently have, it does mean an elevated risk of wildfires starting. As people get out and about to enjoy our lovely countryside: a few top tips:

  • Don't have barbecues or campfires on open ground or heath.
  • Dispose of your litter in the bin. If there are none available, take it home.
  • Don't throw cigarette ends or used matches on the ground, they may still be hot.
  • If you see a fire, call 999 immediately.”
