A woman who died after falling at a disused quarry has been named as an inquest has opened into her death.

Assistant coroner for Dorset, Richard Middleton, opened the inquest into the death of Cattrin Wickens, 82, at Bournemouth town hall today.

The hearing heard from coroner’s officer Sarah Harrison, who told the court that Dorset Police received a call from the ambulance service of a woman who was unresponsive at the cliffs.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Ms Wickens was pronounced dead at 2.47pm on Saturday, June 22.

“She was confirmed deceased at Winspit cottage in Worth Matravers,” the officer said.

A postmortem, carried out at Holly Tree Lodge, ruled the cause of death as multiple injuries.

As reported, the fire service, police, ambulance service and coastguard teams were called to the area of Winspit Quarry near the Purbeck village at around 2pm.

Ms Wickens was walking with her husband along the South West Coast Path when she slipped and fell 60-70 feet at the quarry, a spokesperson for the coastguard previously said.

Ms Wickens was a retired teacher and was living in Poole at the time of her death.

The inquest has been adjourned to March 18 at 2pm.
