A main road is now partially blocked due to a collapsed manhole.
Both ways of the A352 Wareham Road have been blocked due to a collapsed manhole between Warmwell Cross (Broadmayne) and The Red Lion Hotel (Winfrith Newburgh).
Spilled fuel has also been reported on the road.
There were reports of queuing traffic in the area.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We were called at 7.57am on Tuesday June 25 to a report of a broken manhole cover and fuel on the road on the A352 between Owermoigne and Wool.
"Local authority was made aware and are dealing with the incident.
"Officers are assisting with road closures."
At around 2.30pm the road was re-opened.
Openreach are attending the site to carry out repairs so temporary signals are currently in operation which will be manually operated 7am to 7pm.
A spokesperson for Dorset Council highways said: “Openreach are attending the site to make their cover safe and carry out the repairs. While the work takes place temporary signals are in operation.
"These are being manually operated 7am to 7pm. There was also an oil spill in the same location so the road was temporarily closed by the Police.
