A man from Bridport has been charged for attempting to steal a 'number of bottles of alcohol' from shop in Weymouth.

Yesterday afternoon, a 30-year-old man was detained by police officers in the Chapelhay area following a 'short foot pursuit' after reportedly stealing several bottles of alcohol from the Tesco store in St Thomas Street.

Officers were nearby when the alleged theft took place and were able to apprehend the suspect and recovered the goods taken.

He was then charged with theft and obstructing or resisting a police constable in the execution of their duty and will appear at Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Thursday July 11.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "At 12.28pm on Tuesday 18 June 2024 officers on patrol in Weymouth town centre received a report of a shoplifter making off from the Tesco store in St Thomas Street.

"Officers attended and the man reportedly attempted to make off from officers before he was detained in the Chapelhay area.

"After making off and a short foot pursuit, the male couldn't out run our officers and was detained nearby. 

"A number of bottles of alcohol and other items were reportedly recovered.

"A 30-year-old man from Bridport has been charged with theft and obstructing or resisting a police constable in the execution of their duty. He is due to appear at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 11 July 2024."
