Primary school pupils and their parents are fundraising after receiving ‘very upsetting’ news that their school is facing a financial crisis.

Parents recently received an email explaining Chickerell Primary Academy is experiencing a financially challenging time.

Mums and dads have decided to take matters into their own hands by organising a fundraiser all families can get involved in.

They will be undertaking a sponsored walk on Sunday, June 30 from Café Oasis to Lodmoor where the children can then stop off and enjoy a picnic with their friends.

Money raised will be spent on equipment the school needs.

It comes after another Chickerell Primary Academy student was inspired to design and create Taylor Swift-themed bracelets to sell and raise funds for the school.

Katie Rees, whose five-year-old son Aaron is in the reception class, explained how the latest fundraiser came about.

She explained the funding news ‘made her really upset,’ and made her and other parents want to do something about it.

As the school is unable to accept monetary donations, a list has been sent out which includes items that the school are in desperate need of including things like glue sticks, felt tip pens and sports equipment.

Katie said: “There’s a lot of things that they will be missing out on that they can’t replace or get for the kids.

“We tried to think of ways that we could help, a lot of people wanted to give money and we thought it would be a good idea as well to get the kids involved. We have got a WhatsApp group and I forwarded the idea to see if anyone was interested.

“We did something similar for Chickadees (pre-school) to raise money for play equipment.”

The children have not stopped talking about the fundraiser and are very excited to be able to help their school.

Katie added: "They are very excited and keep talking about it – it’s also a good life lesson for them to understand that the school is struggling and how they can help and have fun with their friends at the same time. My little boy loves going to school and at the moment is really loving doing all his phonics.

“The school is so good and kind and caring and they just want to help everybody as much as they can.”

At the time of writing the group have raised an impressive £590 of a £700 target.

Deputy Head Teacher Lorraine Llewellyn said: "We are really touched that our wonderful parents have organised this event to raise money for our school, and are overwhelmed by the generosity of those who have sponsored the children.

"We are looking forward to joining the children and their parents for this event; our children are amazing and we know that they will be superstar walkers on the day. Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for a sunshine on the day, but we will make this event fun whatever the weather."
