A community has come together to mark D-Day and raise cash for a good cause.

On Saturday, June 8 the Church of St Nicholas in Broadwey, Weymmouth hosted a D-Day Commemoration event, attended by over 100 people from the local community and beyond.

Aided by a £350 grant from Weymouth Town Council, the occasion was opened by Julia Curtis-King on behalf of the SSAFA charity who gave an introduction to the work that SSAFA does locally and nationally.

The talk was followed by prayers and a very moving poem read by Susana Malik of St Nicholas - who was the principal organiser of the event.

Following the formalities, there was a comprehensive afternoon tea with cakes whilst being entertained by MusicCraft who played a wide range of music. This included a special interlude with popular songs from wartime Britain - everything from ‘Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major’ to the traditional ‘We’ll Meet Again’.

The money raised at the event will go to the SSAFA, which will be further enhanced by gift aid.

Julia Curtis-King (SSAFA) said she was 'delighted' with the generous funds raised, all of which will go towards helping local serving and veteran military personnel, their families and dependants.

Before closing, Susana Malik gave a few words of thanks to all who contributed and worked to make the event such a success, with a special note of thanks 'Lizzie the Baking Bird', the local baker in Upwey, who made all the cakes and scones, and MusicCraft for providing the afternoon entertainment.

The event concluded with everyone standing to sing a rendition of ‘Jerusalem’, followed by the National Anthem.
