Emergency service crews were called to evacuate a person after they suffered a ‘serious leg injury’ when descending down a embankment on Portland.

Crew form Portland Fire Station, Portland’s Westcliff Coastguard team and paramedics assisted with the extraction of a person who suffered a serious leg injury whilst descending an embankment onto a path at Westcliff on the island.

The incident was reported at 12.51pm on Saturday, June 8 but the information has only now been shared by the coastguard team.  

The casualty was treated on the scene by paramedics before being placed on a stretcher to be recovered back to the roadside at Tradecroft.

Crews from Portland Fire arrived on the scene due to the location and difficult terrain to assist with recovery.

The person was then transported to Dorset County Hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Westcliff Portland Team tasked by Solent Coastguard to assist South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust Paramedics with the extraction of a person who had suffered a serious leg injury whilst descending down an embankment onto the path at Westcliff.

“On scene the casualty was treated for their injuries by paramedics before being placed in the teams stretcher ready to be recovered back to the roadside at Tradecroft.

“Due to the location and difficult terrain extra hands were required a crew from Portland Fire Station arrived on scene and working together the casualty was extracted safely to the awaiting ambulance to be taken to DCH for further treatment.

“We wish them all the best in their recovery. Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team tasked, stood down en route.”
