Two friends from Dorchester are embarking on sponsored walks, covering four counties which border Dorset, to help support a cause close to their hearts.

Bruce Mead, from Dorchester and chair of the West Dorset CAMRA branch, and fellow CAMRA member Dave Harris often venture out on walks across the Dorset countryside, stopping off at pubs along the way.

Throughout June and July, the pair has set themselves a challenge of walking from Bruce’s home in Dorchester to a pub in each of the four counties that border Dorset: Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon, and Hampshire.

“I like walking around the Dorset countryside especially if there’s a pub at the end of the journey.

“I walk with my friend Dave and we thought it would be a good challenge to try and walk from my house in Dorchester to a pub in each of the four county borders.”

Bruce and Dave have already completed their first walk to Crewkerne, Somerset and are due to embark on their next journey to Wiltshire on the June 12.

They will then venture to Devon on June 22 and Hinton Admiral near the Hampshire/ Dorset border on July 20, with a total mileage of around 135 miles.

“We’ve set ourselves a target of raising £1500 and so far, people have pledged £500 which is already an incentive to go and complete it.”

All money raised from the walks will go towards supporting Dorchester Arts – a charity which runs weekly Art for Memory classes in Sherborne, designed for people experiencing the early stages of dementia.

By completing this sponsored challenge, the friends hope to raise enough money to enable the charity to start a similar class in Dorchester.

“We think it’s a thoroughly worthwhile cause. Like many people, Dave and I have had friends and family who have been affected by dementia.

“We found out Dorchester Arts run memory classes to help people in the early stages and we thought it would be good to see the same classes in Dorchester.”

“You’d be supporting something local and would be able to see a good end product.”
