An eight-year-old Weymouth girl has been praised for an incredible achievement after walking more than 200 miles for lifesavers.

Hali-Rai Green challenged herself to walk 200 miles for the RNLI which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.

The youngster absolutely smashed her target, completing 280 miles in May alongside her mum Tasha Green.

During her walks, Hali also made sure to pick up any plastic bottles, microplastics and nurdles that she came across.

She sprinted the last leg of her challenge to the Weymouth Lifeboat Station on Friday evening alongside RNLI mascot Stormy Stan and Neil Carter who was also raising money for the charity by walking from Lyme Regis to Weymouth.

Upon completing the challenge, Hali explained that she was ‘really happy’ and that she won’t be stopping there as she is also planning to take part in a sponsored walk with members of her football club.

She said: “My favourite part of the challenge was raising money for the RNLI so that they can go out and help people. I enjoyed walking around Portland Bill the most and the Roman Temple at Bowleaze.”

Hali developed a love for the emergency services at a young age and was particularly drawn to the RNLI.

She added: “When I was little, I used to call it the nee-noor boat.”

Hali is now going to have some well-deserved rest and plans to celebrate by heading home and watching the Lionesses. She was rewarded with a certificate, an engraved medal, a teddy and her very own RNLI t-shirt to recognise her efforts.

Hali’s mum Tasha expressed how proud she was of her daughter, adding: “As the adult, it was hard to find the motivation to keep going, but when you have an eight-year-old keeping you going you have to.”

Nick Critchell of Weymouth RNLI said: “Every year we are amazed by the support that we get, especially from the community in Weymouth – even more so with Hali being as young as she is – 280 miles is just unbelievable.”
