A Dorset beach which is "brilliant for swimming" has been named as one of the best dog-friendly ones in the UK.

Man O'War Beach was featured in a list from The Guardian among nine others which were selected by the travel writer Lottie Gross.

Discussing the list they shared: "The author of a new guide to dog-friendly days out selects ideal beaches for dog walkers year-round – plus places to stay nearby."

Man O'War Beach named among best UK dog-friendly beaches

Ms Gross commended the Man O'War Beach for a number of factors, including its "sheltered bathing" and how ideal it was for safe swimming.

She wrote: "Few beaches enjoy such sheltered bathing as Man O’War beach in Dorset; its near-perfect crescent shape and rocky outcrops keep the wild currents out.

"This makes it brilliant for swimming – especially for kids or dogs new to such activities – and a good bet on blustery days. Walk along the coast path for views of Durdle Door sea arch."

In terms of where to stay, she recommended The Castle Inn in West Lulworth which has pet-friendly rooms.

The Visit Dorset website recommends using the Durdle Door Holiday Park to park your car and then walk down to the beach.

 

Decent footwear is "essential" due to the steep path that needs to be used to get down to the beach and there are no amenities available on the beach itself.

It adds: "Man O' War beach is accessed by a steep path and steps - not suitable for wheelchair users, mobility scooters or those who have mobility problems.

"It is a 15-minute walk from the car park to the viewpoint and steps down onto the beach."
