A WEYMOUTH holiday park has been granted planning permission to build a hot food takeaway on the site.

It claims the unit will create four full-time and four part-time jobs, encouraging holidaymakers to stay for their take-away food, rather than drive off site.

The Haven Weymouth Bay site off Preston Road had asked for what it describes as a Cooks Unit on an area currently being used for caravan sales, using an adjoining service yard for bin storage.

It  will concentrate on fish and chip sales – which environmental health officers had previously warned could lead to concerns from neighbours, including the nearby village hall.

An initial plan, which had raised concerns, was withdrawn with a re-worked design being submitted including different methods to deal with noise and smells, which council environmental health officers now say should provide ‘satisfactory mitigatation.’ The unit, of 53 square metres, will be just to the left of the Preston Road site entrance close to the site’s entertainment complex.

Dorset Council planning officers say the buidling will not be out of keeping with the area: “Given the existing buildings of a similar character and use within the holiday park, it is considered that the proposed building would not have a significant adverse impact on the character of the site or its setting. Therefore, it is considered that the proposal would be in keeping with the character of the site and its setting and acceptable in terms of the impact on the character of the area."

The take-away hours of operation will be limited to 11pm in the peak season, an hour earlier off-peak, with no deliveries before 8am or after 8pm.
